🧠 The Foundation of Cognition

Thinking is the cornerstone of all cognitive processes, a high-level mental activity unique to humans. It's a high-level mental process involving the manipulation and analysis of information, generally organized, goal-directed, and reliant on existing knowledge.

What is Thinking?

Thinking is a high-level mental process involving the manipulation and analysis of information. It is generally organized, goal-directed, and relies on knowledge we already possess. While it's an internal process, its activities—like planning, reasoning, or judging—can be inferred from observable behavior.

Culture and Thinking

Our beliefs, values, and social practices strongly influence the way we think. This leads to different dominant styles of cognition:

Analytical Thinking

Involves focusing on and analyzing each object in a scene or problem separately.

Holistic Thinking

Emphasizes thinking about the relationships between objects and their backgrounds.

🧱 Building Blocks of Thought

Thinking relies on knowledge we already possess. This knowledge is represented internally in two primary forms: mental images and concepts. These "building blocks" help us organize our knowledge, making our thought process quick and efficient.

Mental Image

A mental representation of a sensory experience. This can be visual or related to other senses, and we use it when thinking about things, places, and events.

Concepts

A mental representation of a category. Concepts refer to a class of objects, ideas, or events that share common properties, helping us organize knowledge efficiently.

Hierarchy of Concepts

Concepts exist in hierarchical levels, moving from the most general to the most specific. We most frequently use the "Basic" level in conversation.

Superordinate (e.g., "Animal")
Basic (e.g., "Dog")
Subordinate (e.g., "Four-legged animal that barks")

Prototype

Since many concepts are fuzzy or poorly defined, people construct a prototype. This is the best, most typical, or standard representative member of a category. We use it for comparison when deciding if a new item belongs to that category.

⚙️ Processes of Thought

Problem Solving

Goal-directed thinking aimed at reaching a desired outcome, moving from an initial state (the problem) to an end state (the goal).

Reasoning

The process of gathering and analyzing information to reach conclusions. It's a form of problem solving where the goal is to determine what can be drawn from given info.

Judgment & Decision-making

Interrelated processes. Judgment is forming opinions or evaluating events, while decision-making is selecting one option from a set of alternatives.

Creative Thinking

Distinguished by the production of novel and original ideas or solutions that are also appropriate, constructive, and socially desirable.

🧩 Problem Solving

Problem solving is goal-directed thinking that moves from an initial state (the problem) to an end state (the goal) through a series of mental operations. However, several common obstacles can hinder this process. Click on each obstacle below to learn more.

⚖️ Reasoning

Reasoning is the process of gathering and analyzing information to reach conclusions. It's how we determine what conclusions can be drawn from a set of given information. The two main forms are deductive and inductive reasoning.

Deductive Reasoning

General → Specific

This begins with a general assumption (a premise) that is believed to be true and leads to a specific conclusion based on that assumption. If the initial general statement is untrue, the resulting conclusion will be invalid.

Example:
1. All men are mortal. (General premise)
2. Socrates is a man. (Specific premise)
3. Therefore, Socrates is mortal. (Specific conclusion)

Inductive Reasoning

Specific → General

This is based on specific facts and observations to draw a general conclusion. It involves observing multiple instances and then determining a general rule that covers them all. This is common in scientific thought.

Example:
1. This swan is white. (Specific observation)
2. That swan is white. (Specific observation)
3. All swans I have seen are white. (Specific observation)
4. Therefore, all swans are white. (General conclusion)

Analogy

A specific form of reasoning where the relationship between two items (A is to B) is identified as the same as the relationship between two other items (C is to D). Analogies help in identifying and visualizing important characteristics.

🤔 Judgment & Decision-Making

These two interrelated processes are crucial for navigating daily life. Judgment involves forming opinions, while decision-making involves acting on them by choosing from available alternatives. The choices in decision-making are usually known beforehand.

Judgment

The act of drawing conclusions, forming opinions, or evaluating events and objects based on knowledge and available evidence. Judgments are influenced by personal beliefs and can be changed with new information.

Decision-Making

This involves selecting or choosing one option from a set of several available alternatives. The process requires evaluating the associated costs and benefits of each alternative before making a choice.

A Visual Metaphor

The relationship between these concepts can be visualized like planning a trip. You use all available evidence to conclude which path is best, and only then do you commit to traveling it.

💡 Creative Thinking

Creative thinking is distinguished by the production of novel and original ideas or solutions that are also reality-oriented, appropriate, and constructive. It relies on two different types of thinking: convergent and divergent.

Convergent Thinking

This type of thinking is necessary for problems that have only one correct answer. The mind converges on that single solution. It is important for identifying the most useful or appropriate idea *after* many options have been generated.

Divergent Thinking

This is open-ended thinking where the individual generates many different answers or ideas for a question. It is essential for producing novel and original ideas and is characterized by fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration.

Creative thinking is not a single event but a process involving several distinct stages. This chart visualizes the typical flow, from initial preparation to the final verification of the idea.

Nativist View (Nature)

Argued that children are born with a "universal grammar," and that language development is largely biological, like physical maturation.
